Bacterial Characterization
Compare isolates at the strain level with automated ribotyping
on the RiboPrinter® system.
To complement our sequenced-based microbial identification services Accugenix now offers strain-level characterization of bacterial isolates using
automated ribotyping.
The RiboPrinter® system is an automated ribotyping system that generates a DNA fingerprint of the Ribosomal RNA genes. The process requires a live organism and starts by cutting the bacterial genome with a restriction enzyme and separating the resulting fragments by gel electrophoresis. Then a DNA probe, chemiluminescent agent, and camera are used to visualize the DNA fragments of interest. The resulting RiboPrint® pattern can be compared against the RiboPrint® patterns of other isolates to determine their similarity.

Bacterial Characterization Sample Submittal Information
Our Turnaround times for Bacterial Characterization include options from 1 Day Turnaround to 20 Day Turnaround. When submitting a sample for 1 Day Turnaround Time (TAT), a pure culture less than 72 hours old is required. For all other TATs, pure cultures less than 72 hours old are recommended. Any cultures submitted that are more than 72 hours old will require a subculture. TAT for these samples will begin after successful subculture. Please label each sample with date cultured. Our standard Bacterial Characterization test (all BacRib test codes)
includes analysis of the sample with two enzymes, EcoRI and PVUII. A one
enzyme analysis test is available (BacRibSE test codes) but is not
recommended. Click
here for technical information supporting our recommendation of a two
enzyme analysis for strain characterization.
