Board of Directors

A privately held company, Accugenix is controlled by a Board of Directors and its shareholders, who include Mr. Mark Martin, Mr. Aaron Martin, Ms. Patricia Wray and Mr. Douglas Smith.

Senior Leadership Team

Douglas Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer
Doug brings over 40 years of experience working in the industry and has been a key innovator at several leading companies. At Accugenix, he drives research and development efforts, developing and improving methods, assays and identification databases. Prior to Accugenix, Doug held senior level positions at Monogram Biosciences, Applied BioSystems, Agilent (Hewlett Packard), Spectra Physics, and Genomyx Corp (Genentech). While working for these companies, Doug achieved significant success in the development and commercialization of automated microbial identification systems, including the MicroSeq®  system which uses comparative sequencing and dedicated databases to identify bacteria and fungi. At Agilent (Hewlett Packard), he was the developer and program manager of a fully automated GC fatty acid system and its library for the identification of bacterial samples. Doug received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering from University of California, Berkeley.

Patricia Wray, Chief Operating Officer

Patty became the COO in October of 2010 after serving as an operational consultant to the organization. Prior to joining Accugenix, Patty held executive level positions in the biotechnology and high-tech industries including Monogram Biosciences, Genentech, Inc. and Hewlett-Packard. She received her Masters degree in Personnel Administration from Michigan State University and a B.S. in Horticulture from the University of Delaware.

Beth Burke, Senior Director

Beth joined Accugenix in 1997 and was involved in establishing the sequencing assay, one of the first sequencing systems dedicated to the identification of environmental isolates. Since that time, she has held several leadership roles including Technical Support, Quality Specialist, Laboratory Manager and Director of Quality. In 2010, she was named Senior Director, leading the organization’s operational units. Beth received her Bachelors degree in Animal Science from the University of Delaware.

Mehul Patel, Director of Marketing

Mehul joined Accugenix in 2008. He has extensive experience in research and development, market analysis, technology and product development for the Biotech and Pharmaceutical industries. Mehul is currently responsible for all activities related to conceptualizing and implementing marketing strategies and achieving marketing targets in support of corporate goals at Accugenix. He received his B.S. degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan and his Masters of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Delaware.

Gary Merkel, Software Applications Manager
Gary joined Accugenix in 2005 after accumulating more than 20 years’ experience in principal software design and development in commercial applications involving microbial identification (DNA sequencing, fatty acid profiling), analytical chemistry (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography), gas chromatography, environmental screening, computational chemistry (lead generation and lead optimization), chemical engineering (static and dynamic process simulation) and business and financial systems. At Accugenix, Gary has primary responsibility for strategic software development. His team is committed to achieving the highest levels of software system performance, quality and compliance in a cGMP regulated environment. Gary received his B.S. degree in Accounting and Statistics from the University of Pennsylvania and his M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware.

Michael Anderson, National Sales Manager
Michael joined Accugenix in 2004. Before joining Accugenix, Mike represented several leading life science companies as a clinical microbiology laboratory supervisor and sales professional, including: bioMérieux, Inc., Remel and USB Corporation. He received his B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Maine.

Ulrich K. Herber, Ph.D., Managing Director, Accugenix GmbH
Ulrich joined Accugenix in March 2008 to lead our European subsidiary. Prior to joining Accugenix, Ulrich was the Operations Director at Concept Heidelberg, Europe’s leading advanced training and information services provider in the area of pharmaceutical quality assurance and drug safety. In addition, he was the Product Manager for the Biotech division of Sartorius. Ulrich currently serves on the advisory board of ECA Working Groups – Rapid Microbiological Methods and brings over ten years of microbiological experience within the EU pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Herber received both his Diplom-Chemiker and Dr. rer. nat. degrees from the University of Würzburg, Germany. During this time, Ulrich also performed research at the University of Murcia, Spain.

Brenda Levin, Corporate Controller
Brenda joined Accugenix in January 2007. She brings 20 years of management accounting experience to Accugenix specializing in financial systems operations integration. In 2010, Brenda was named Corporate Controller. She holds a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Colorado.
