As a complement to our sequence-based microbial identification services, Accugenix offers automated ribotyping for the strain-level characterization and tracking of bacterial isolates. Automated ribotyping is able to differentiate isolates at the strain level by examining multiple regions of the ribosomal RNA genes.

Automated ribotyping uses restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis to generate a DNA fingerprint for each sample. Unlike other methods that are based on a one restriction enzyme approach, Accugenix uses a two enzyme methodology to obtain greater discriminatory power. The resulting DNA fingerprints, stored in customer specific databases, are compared to determine the similarity of the isolates of interest. Accugenix will perform custom comparisons between any samples or sets of samples upon request, all at no additional charge to you.
A useful application of automated ribotyping is the creation of a map of your microbial environment. Here’s how it works: a client-specific database is created to archive fingerprints of isolates from your production facilities. When a contaminant is encountered, you can quickly pinpoint where you have seen that particular strain before. This can greatly reduce the time it can take to complete an investigation into a source of contamination.
